March 2012

Dr Nick Love, a postdoc in the Amaya Lab, was awarded the Westminster Wharton Medal at the SET for Britain competition held at the House of Commons on 12th March. The SET for Britain competition is designed to support and promote British scientists, engineers, and technologists in the early stages of their careers. Nick won the gold award in the biology session for his research on the molecular mechanisms underlying appendage regeneration in tadpoles in order to advance research into scar-free healing, and then went on to win the overall prize later in the day. May 2011

Movies on early frog development from the Amaya Lab were featured in a BBC series, Inside The Human Body: Creation, on Thursday 5th May. The full programme is available on BBC iPlayer until Thursday 2nd June, or the movies can be viewed on the Amaya Lab website.

April 2011

The Healing Foundation has funded a new PhD student from China to join the Amaya Lab. Yue Han will begin her PhD studies in April.

January 2011

An article by Kim Mace and her lab has been published in the journal Blood: Mahdipour, E. Charnock, J.C. and Mace, K.A. (2011) Hoxa3 promotes the differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells into proangiogenic Gr-1+CD11b+ myeloid cells. Blood 117(3):815-826.

April 2010

The Amaya Lab contributed an image for the front cover of Science magazine. The image of a late-stage Xenopus Tropicalis tadpole, taken by Siwei Zhang and Jingjing Li was selected for the cover of the 30th April issue and can be viewed online here.

Spring 2010

A new research group joined the Healing Foundation Centre in Spring 2010. Matthew Hardman and his lab investigate the role of hormones on delayed wound healing in mice and humans. The Centre now hosts five different labs, all with the common goal of improving our understanding of wound healing and tissue regeneration using a variety of model organisms.

January 2010

The Healing Foundation Centre has recently gained a new Postdoctoral Researcher and a new PhD Student. Jayne Fitzsimmons joined the Mace lab as a Postdoc and Karen Pickering joined the Millard lab as a Healing Foundation funded PhD Student.

December 2009

The Healing Foundation Centre was honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex on Tuesday 1st December. As patron of The Healing Foundation, HRH came to meet Enrique and hear about the research conducted at the centre. The visit included a presentation followed by a tour of the labs.

October 2009

Enrique Amaya featured in The Times science and environment magazine, Eureka, on Thursday 8th October. The articles focused on 15 different scientists tackling some of the world's most pressing problems. To read the article, please see The Times Online.

April 2009

An article by Yaoyao Chen and her Healing Foundation Centre colleagues has been accepted by the journal Blood and will be published later this year: Chen, Y. Costa, R.M.B. Love, N.R. Soto, X. Roth, M. Paredes, R. and Amaya, E. (2009) C/EBPalpha initiates primitive myelopoiesis in pluripotent embryonic cells. Blood 114:40-48.

An article by Kimberly Mace has been accepted by the journal Stem Cells and will be published later this year. Kim began this work at the University of California, San Francisco, and continued once she joined the Healing Foundation Centre. Mace KA, Restivo TE, Rinn JL, Paquet AC, Chang HY, Young DM, Boudreau NB (2009) HOXA3 modulates injury-induced mobilization and recruitment of bone marrow-derived cells. Stem Cells 27(7): 1654-1665.

January 2009

An article by Robert Lea, Karel Dorey and Enrique Amaya has been accepted by Developmental Dynamics and will be published in a special patterns and phenotypes edition later this year: Lea, R. Papalopulu, N. Amaya, E. and Dorey, K. (2009) Temporal and spatial expression of FGF ligands and receptors during Xenopus development. Developmental Dynamics 238:1467-1479.

September 2008

The Healing Foundation Centre grew substantially in September with the addition of 5 new PhD Students. The Healing Foundation has funded 3 new PhD students from China to join the Amaya Lab: Jingjing Li, Siwei Zhang and Yanan Zhao. The Mace Lab welcomes Pauline Bannon, and Georgina Barratt joins the Millard Lab.

Ricardo Costa and Enrique Amaya published an article in Blood on 15th September 2008: Costa, R.M.B. Soto, X. Chen, Y. Zorn, A.M. and Amaya, E. (2008) spib is required for primitive myeloid development in Xenopus. Blood 112(6): 2287-2296.

October 2007

Previously a Post-Doc in Enrique Amaya's lab, Karel Dorey has recently been awarded an RCUK Fellowship for Tissue Regeneration. The 5-year appointment started on 1st October 2007. Karel will be studying the role of TGF-beta signalling during wound healing and regeneration.

September 2007

The Healing Foundation Centre was formally opened on 13th September 2007 by Simon Weston OBE, the Healing Foundation Lead Ambassador. The opening marked the beginning of the two-day Healing Foundation Centre Opening Symposium on wound healing and tissue regeneration. The Centre hosted a wide range of international guest speakers who gave talks on a variety of topics from wound healing in Drosophila to limb regeneration in salamander to the translation of such research into clinical practice.

January 2007

The Healing Foundation Centre and The University of Manchester have awarded two Healing Foundation Fellowships to Dr Kimberly Mace from the University of California, San Francisco, and Dr Tom Millard from the University of Bristol. The Fellowships attracted a wide variety of international applicants and six of the strongest candidates were invited to the university for a two-day interview on 15th and 16th January 2007. A mini-symposium was held on the second day where each candidate delivered a talk on their current and future research plans to an audience from the Faculty of Life Sciences. The Healing Foundation Centre is looking forward to welcoming Kim and Tom to The University of Manchester. Kim is expected to join the Centre in July 2007 followed by Tom in January 2008.
